Although our tree is in spring, the wild cherry is arguably the most ornamental of our native woodland trees.
The 'avium' in the latin name refers to birds which eat the cherries as soon as they are ripe.

Distribution
With a wide variety of names the cherry tree is to be found on all the continents and nearly all countries have a 'native'.
